Title 22 training requirements
Our online coursework can count toward the instructional portion of the 40-hour initial training California requires for RCFE direct care staff (Health & Safety Code §1569.625). State law also requires 16 hours of hands-on training, dementia-care and hospice/postural-support hours before working independently, and medication training with hands-on shadowing and an exam (§1569.69). The employing care home confirms and documents that each staff member’s training meets these requirements.
Clinical shadowing sign-off
Before certification, every candidate completes supervised clinical shadowing in a licensed care home. The supervising RCFE administrator or nurse completes and signs this competency checklist.
Live Scan fingerprinting
Background clearance is required, and fees are paid by the candidate
Anyone who will work in a licensed residential care facility for the elderly must have a criminal record clearance or exemption from the California Department of Social Services, based on California DOJ and FBI fingerprints, before employment or initial presence in the facility (Health & Safety Code §1569.17). Fingerprints are submitted through the hiring care home on CDSS form LIC 9163. All fingerprinting fees are the direct responsibility of the candidate.
When a partner care home offers you a position, it will give you a California Department of Social Services Live Scan form (LIC 9163) or a Guardian link with its facility number. Take that form and your photo ID to any Live Scan location.
Find a Live Scan location within 15 miles
Upload your stamped Live Scan slip
After your fingerprints are taken, upload a photo or scan of the completed, stamped Live Scan form (LIC 9163) copy so we can track your background clearance.
